What exactly are skinny jeans, when did they come into fashion and what is their role in fashion today?
As the name suggests, skinny jeans are made to help you feel thin, maybe even slimmer than you actually are. They are also known as slim fit pants because of this. They are different to drainpipe jeans as they taper at the bottom of the leg instead of just going down straight which means that they are considerably less baggy. In fact there is often a zip at the bottom to help people actually put jeans to go over their feet.
Some other words that people use for them are skinnies, stovepipes, cigarette pants, pencil pants, skinny pants and a few others. All these examples emphasise how tight they fit.
This jeans style originated back in the 1950s and one of the first to put them on in public and make a big style statement was Elvis Presley. They were a main factor in rock and roll getting the bad boy image which still remains to a certain extent.
For a lot of years since then they were always very closely aligned to music in some way. The stars from country music dressed in them as did several famous bands including the Beatles. They were the chosen fashion of the teddy boys who were the baddies and were very different to the flower power fashion which the goodies wore.
Some people used to pull black skinny jeans on and then shrink them by climbing into a bath of water to make them an even tighter fit. Such was the urge to make them as tight as possible.
The fashion faded from a lot of the music scene a lot in the 1990s where people tended to prefer the baggier jeans which have always been around but worn for more practical purposes and not as a style statement.
They have come back again in the 2000s mainly because of indie bands which has helped them in becoming a vey popular piece of clothing. They are one of the few fashion accessories that are as popular with men as to women. Other from black, they now can be bought in many sizes and colours.
Skinny jeans do not suit everyone however. We should mention that if someone is of the fuller figure to start with, putting them on will not look good. A person needs to be fairly skinny first.
The same applies to what you wear with them. It might be an idea to wear something baggier on your top to balance the effect out somewhat. They look good tucked into long boots and this makes the wearer look taller than you really are. If you are already tall and skinny, you can do whatever you like. You can wear whatever you like with your womens skinny jeans.
