Customer Reviews
What are skinny jeans, when did they become fashionable and what is their role in today’s styles?
Skinny jeans are, as the name implies made to help you look thin, maybe even slimmer than you really are. They are sometimes called slim fit pants because of this. They differ to drainpipe jeans in that they taper near the leg bottom instead of just going down straight which means that they are considerably less baggy. In fact there is often a zip at the bottom to help people actually get them on over your feet.
Some other names that people call them are skinnies, skinny pants, pencil pants, stovepipes, cigarette pants plus a few others. All the words emphasise how tight they fit.
This style of jeans originated back in the 1950s and one of the first to show them off and make a big fashion statement was Elvis Presley. In reality they were probably a major reason for rock and roll getting the bad boy image that still is there to a certain extent.
After that for many years in some way they were closely aligned to music. The stars from country music wore them as did lots of famous bands including the Beatles. They were the chosen fashion of the teddy boys who were the baddies and were completely different to the flower power clothes which the goodies wore.
I heard that people were known to pull black skinny jeans on and then shrink them by getting in a bath of water to be fit even tighter. Such was the need to fit them as tight as possible.
This fashion faded outside the music scene a lot in the last ten years of the 20th century where people tended to favour the baggier jeans which have been around for a long time but worn for more practical reasons rather than as a style statement.
They have made a come back in the 2000s mainly because of indie bands which has led to them again becoming a vey popular piece of clothing. They are one of the few fashion accessories which appeal as much to men as to women. Other from black, you can now get them in most colours and sizes.
However, skinny jeans are not suitable for all. We should say that if someone is of the fuller figure to begin with, they will not look right when they put them on. A person should be fairly skinny to start with.
The same applies to what you wear them with. It might be an idea to wear a baggier top to counteract the effect out somewhat. Tucking them into long boots looks good and this can make you seem taller than you really are. If you are already tall and skinny, the world is your oyster. You can wear anything with your grey skinny jeans.
